今日は work on というフレーズについてお話します。work on は何かを作る、なおすという意味です。何かに「取り組む」ということです。

Today I’m going to discuss the phrase “to work on something”. This is a very useful expression and I want to share it with you.

Now, what does the phrase mean? When you work on something, you spend time producing something or improving something.

For example, you have a project. You work on the project. You have a problem. You work on the problem. You’re given homework. You work on your homework. You’re trying to solve a crossword puzzle. You’re working on the crossword puzzle.

Let’s say, your boss has given you some work and he asks, “Have you finished?” How would you answer the question? “Well, not yet, but I’m working on it. Give me another two hours”. Something like that.

Now, let’s practice the phrase together, shall we? Please repeat after me:

今日は work on というフレーズについてお話します。たいへんよく使われる表現ですので、覚えておくと便利です。

work on は何かを作る、なおすという意味です。何かに「取り組む」ということです。

例えば、何かのプロジェクトがある。この「プロジェクトに取り組む」を英語で言うと、work on the project です。何か問題がある。この「問題に取り組む」は work on the problem です。宿題を出されました。この「宿題に取り組む」なら work on (your) homework です。「クロスワードパズルに取り組む」は work on a crossword puzzle ですね。

例えば、上司から仕事を託されたとします。上司はあなたにこう問います。「終わったかい？ 」さあ何と答えましょう。「今やってるところです。あと2時間ほどかかりそうです」 こんなふうに答えるかもしれません。この場合も work on を使って作文できます(^_^)v
