It’s September now. Eight months have gone by. A year consists of twelve months, so eight months means two thirds of the year.

Now, do you think I’m going to talk about fractions today? Actually I’ll let fractions wait and talk about the idiom “to consist of something”.

When you talk about something that includes other things or that is made up of other things or other people, you can use the verb “consist”.

For example, there are 12 boys and 16 girls in the class. The class consists of 12 boys and 16 girls.

Let’s say, you ordered breakfast. You had a cup of coffee, fresh fruit and pastries. Your breakfast consisted of a cup of coffee, fresh fruit and pastries.

What does water consist of? Water consists of hydrogen and oxygen.
