今日はそんなサンクスギビングデーについてお話します。

Hi everyone! Thank you for tuning in to Time for English.

While Halloween snowballs into popular phenomenon, Thanksgiving seems to be receiving far less attention in Japan. But Thanksgiving is definitely one of the most important holidays in the United States. It’s celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November each year to express thanks for material and spiritual possessions.

The period from Thanksgiving Day through to New Year’s Day is often called the holiday season in the US, and the Friday after Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday.

Thanksgiving is a day for family gathering and reunion and food is big part of the day. The most famous food associated with Thanksgiving is turkey with cranberry sauce. Steamed vegetables and mashed potatoes are passed around the table and by the time you feel as stuffed as your turkey, you’re ready to have a big slice of apple pie with a big scoop of ice cream!

日本のハロウィーン人気が雪だるま式に膨らむ一方、サンクスギビングデーは今ひとつぱっとしません。でも、米国では間違いなく、サンクスギビングデーは最も重要な祝日の一つです。米国のサンクスギビングデーは11月の4週目の木曜日、物質的、精神的な豊かさに感謝する日です。

サンクスギビングデーから開けて元旦までの期間を米国では「ホリデーシーズン」と呼びます。また、サンクスギビングデー翌日の金曜日は「ブラックフライデー」です。

サンクスギビングデーは家族の祝日、日頃離れて暮らす家族が久しぶりに顔を合わせる機会でもあります。自然、ごちそうはこの祝日の重要な一部です。そしてサンクスギビングデーのごちそうと言えば、何と言ってもターキーとクランベリーソースでしょう。茹でた野菜とマッシュポテトの皿が回され、お腹に詰め物を詰められた七面鳥と同じくらいお腹がいっぱいになる頃、アイスクリームをたっぷり添えた大きなアップルパイが供されるのです(^^)
