何の前触れもなく何かが起こるとき「青天の霹靂」といいますね。英語ではしばしばout of the blueという慣用表現を使います。

Last time I used the idiom “out of the blue“. Are you familiar with the expression? If something happens “out of the blue“, it’s completely unexpected; it happens suddenly or without warning.

People love to use idioms and proverbs when they give a speech or presentation. And when my client use one in a business meeting, as an interpreter, I must recognize it and come up with a similar expression in Japanese, instantly.

A little while ago, I was translating for a group of business people from the US and one of the gentlemen said in a meeting, “You don’t want to throw the baby out with the bathwater”. 前回のレッスンでout of the blueというフレーズを使いました。このフレーズ、ご存知ですか？ 不意に、あるいは唐突に、何の前触れもなく何かが起こるとき、英語ではしばしばout of the blueという慣用表現を使います。いわゆる「青天の霹靂」です。

スピーチやプレゼンテーションではことわざや慣用表現が好んで用いられます。もし私のお客様が商用の会議でこういう表現を使ったら、通訳としてはことわざなり慣用表現が使われたことを認識して、なるべく近い日本語の表現に置き換えなければなりません。しかも瞬時にです。
