Today we’re going to look at the word “access“.

If you have access to something such as information or equipment, it means you have the opportunity or right to see it or use it. If you have access to a building, it means you are able or allowed to go into it.

Let’s say, you’re a college student and you can use the college library. You have access to the college library. You have a Wi-Fi connection at home. You have access to the Internet at home. In Tokyo there is a dense network of railway, subway and bus lines. We have easy access to public transportation in Tokyo. However, there are areas where people have very limited access or no access to public transportation.

Sometimes the word is applied to a person. For example, if you’re arrested as a suspect, it’s important to have access to a lawyer.

今日は access という言葉についてお話します。

have access、「アクセスを持っている」とはどういうことなのでしょう。例えば、have access to information ならば、「情報を閲覧できる立場にある、その権利がある」という意味です。have access to equipment ならば、何らかの「道具を使用できる立場にある、あるいはその権利がある」という意味です。また、「建物に対して access がある」というのは、その建物に「立ち入ることができる、立ち入りを許可されている」ということです。

例えば、あなたは大学の学生で、大学の図書館を利用することができます。つまり、You have access to the college library ということです。あるいは、自宅でWi-Fi接続ができるなら、You have access to the Internet at home、自宅でインターネットを使える環境にあるということです。東京は鉄道、地下鉄、バスなど、公共の交通網が充実しています。accessを使って表現するなら、We have easy access to public transportation in Tokyo となります。反対に、公共交通機関が十分に整備されていない、あるいはまったく整備されていない地域もあります。こういう場合は have limited access とか have no access のように表現します。

access は人に使うこともあります。例えば、何かの容疑者として逮捕されたりしたら、弁護士に接見できないと困ります。have access to a lawyer で「弁護士を呼ぶこと、弁護士に接見することができる」という意味になります。
