Hi everyone! Thank you for tuning in to Time for English.

The Kanji sai, meaning “disaster” or “misfortune”, was selected as the character that best symbolizes the nation’s social mood in 2018.

It’s unfortunate what many of us remember most at the end of the year are disasters and misfortunes, such as earthquakes, typhoons, heavy rainfalls and flooding, or record-breaking summer heat.

But let’s not be discouraged. Instead, let’s wish and strive for something better and brighter in the year to come so that we’ll be able to choose a Kanji character having a more positive connotation when the year ends.

In the meantime, Kaori and I would like to thank you all for staying with us and supporting us throughout the year. We wish you a happy, healthy, brand new year!

2018年の日本の世相を最もよく表す漢字として、「災」の字が選ばれました。

多くの人が1年の終わりに一番強く思い出すのが地震とか台風とか、豪雨や洪水、記録的な酷暑など、災害や苦難というのはほんとうに悲しいことです。

でも、気を落としてばかりはいられません。来る年がより良い、より明るい年であることを祈り、またそうなるように努力しましょう。来年の終わりにはもっとポジティブな意味合いを持つ漢字を選びたいですものね。

それはそれとして。カオリ君も私も1年を通して応援してくれた皆さんに心から感謝しています。どうもありがとう。そして皆様、新しい年をどうぞ楽しく、健やかにお迎えください。
