The Heisei period will end in another two weeks and the new era begins on May 1.

It was announced earlier this month that the 248th imperial era was named “Reiwa”. A Japanese era name, or “gengo” is a combination of two Chinese characters, traditionally chosen from the Chinese classics. But for the first time ever, the era name was taken from the oldest existing anthology of Japanese poetry.

The news was reported worldwide, experts and media offering different interpretations of the meanings of “rei” and “wa”. According to BBC, for example, Reiwa signifies “order and harmony”.

It’s true (that) the character “rei” of Reiwa is most often used to mean “order”. But the government’s official explanation is that “rei” has the meaning of “good” or “beautiful”. Meanwhile, everyone agrees the character “wa” means “peace” or “harmony”.

平成はあと2週間で幕を閉じます。そして5月1日から新しい年号が始まります。

日本の248番目の元号が「令和」であると発表されたのはちょうど一週間前のこと。皆さんご承知の通り、日本の元号は漢字二文字から成り、その典拠は伝統的に中国の古典でした。しかしこの新しい元号は史上初めて日本最古の歌集から選ばれました。

改元のニュースは海外でも報道されましたが、特に「令和」の意味の解釈はぜひチェックしておきたいところ。例えばBBCは「令和」をorderとharmonyと解釈していました。

確かに、「令」という漢字はorder（規則、命令）という意味で使われることが最も多いのですが、政府の公式見解ではgoodやbeautifulを意味するとしています。もう一方の「和」はもちろん、peace（平和）やharmony（調和）ですね。
