先週は休み明けに使える”How did you spend ～?”というフレーズを取り上げました。今日は”spend”という単語について注目したいと思います。

Last week you learned how to find out how other people spend their long weekends and holidays. Have you had a chance to use the question in real life? I suppose you’ve got a lot to talk about after a very special extra-long 10-day Golden Week with the new emperor’s enthronement included.

Today, I want to do a quick review of the word “spend”. We’ve talked about the word spend many times before. So I’m sure you know what the word means and how it’s used. But you know what they say: repetition is the mother of all learning. We might as well do it again.

Essentially, you spend time doing something. For example, I spent the whole day reading. Kaori spent the weekend weeding the garden. They spent hours catching up on each other’s news. Hanako has spent years trying to learn English.

Now, would you like to practice together? Please repeat after me:

先週は「けっこう長いお休みだったけど、何してた？」と尋ねるときのフレーズをご紹介しました。実際の生活で使う機会はあったでしょうか。今年のゴールデンウィークは例年より長い10連休で、新天皇の即位もありました。きっと話したいことは山ほどあることでしょう。

そういうことで、今日は動詞 spend についてざっとおさらいしたいと思います。spend についてはこれまでに度々取り上げてきたので、皆さん、意味も使い方もよくご承知のことと思います。でも、よく言うでしょ？繰り返しはあらゆる学びの母。せっかくなのでもう一度やっときましょう。

基本は spend＋時間や期間＋動名詞 です。例えば、I spent the whole day reading は「まる一日本を読んで過ごした」という意味です。Kaori spent the weekend weeding the garden は「カオリ君は土日を使って庭の草むしりをしました」です。They spent hours catching up on each other’s news は「二人はお互いの近況について何時間も話し続けた」だし、Hanako has spent years trying to learn English は「ハナコはもう何年も英語学習にトライしている」です。
