Are you familiar with the idiom “to ring a bell”?

If something rings a bell, it reminds you of something, or it sounds familiar to you, although you can’t remember exactly what it is.

For example, your friend mentions someone’s name, and the name rings a bell with you. That means the name sounds familiar to you, but you can’t remember any details about the person. Contrarily, if the name doesn’t ring any bells, you are not familiar with the name at all.

You can also use this idiom when you see something that reminds you of something.

For example, a detective shows you a picture of someone and asks: Does this photo ring any bells with you?” In other words, the detective is asking if you remember anything by seeing the photograph.

ring a bell というイディオムをご存知でしょうか。

「なんとなく聞き覚えはあるんだけど、詳しいことは思い出せない」というときに、この ring a bell というイディオムを使います。

例えば、お友だちが誰かの名前を口にしました。その名前には聞き覚えがありました。でも詳しいことは思い出せません。こういうシチュエーションで the name rings a bell という表現を使います。反対に、その名前に全然聞き覚えがない場合は、the name doesn’t ring any bells と言います。

「聞き覚え」だけでなく、「見覚え」の有る無しにもこのイディオムを使うことができます。

例えば、警察の人に誰かの写真を見せられ、「この写真（の人）について何か知りませんか？」なんて場合にもこのイディオムが使えます。
