earlier this monthはどんな意味？

月曜日のレッスンで earlier this month という表現を使っているのですが、この earlier this month っていったいいつを指しているのでしょう。

this month ですから「今月」です。earlierは「ある時点より以前」を意味します。例えば、今日が10月24日なら、10月1日から23日までのいつかです。とはいえ、普通、昨日やおとといであれば、yesterday とか the day before yesterday を使います。感覚的には昨日やおとといよりもうちょっと earlier な時点に使うのが妥当でしょう。

具体的な訳語としては、単に「今月」としたり、「今月に入って」などが使われます。場合によっては「今月初め」でもいいんですが、earlier this month は必ずしも「月の初め」を意味するわけではありません。

earlier this week や earlier this year も同じです。earlier today ということもあります。

Japan increased its consumption tax earlier this month for the first time in five years.

「今月、日本の消費税が5年ぶりに上がりました」

I bought this earlier (today), but it seems to have a stain on it.

「さっきこれを買ったんだけど、ちょっとシミが付いてるみたいなんだよね」

A new study was released earlier this year.

「今年に入ってから、新しい研究結果が発表された」
