今日ご紹介するフレーズはこれ。Is that too much to ask?直訳すると「これは多すぎるお願いですか?」ですね。些細なことをお願いしたつもりが思い通りに相手がやってくれない。そんな時に使える表現です。

Hi everyone! Thank you for tuning in to Time for English.

Are you familiar with the expression “too much to ask“? This phrase is often used in the form of a question. Is that too much to ask?

When you say this phrase, make sure you sound frustrated because you’re supposed to be. You want something from somebody which seems to you quite simple and easy, but you don’t get it.

For example, let’s say, you have a messy roommate. You might say, “Hey, you can borrow my book, you can borrow my hair dryer or anything. But when you’re done, put it back where it was. Is that too much to ask?”

Another example. Your husband is not very helpful. “Hey, Hun, I told you to take out the garbage. Is that too much to ask?”

too much to ask というフレーズをご存知でしょうか。たいていは Is that too much to ask? という疑問文で使われます。

このフレーズを口にするときは、必ず不満げに言いましょう。不満なときに使う表現ですから(^^;)
誰かに何かをお願いする。あなたとしてはそれほど「無理な注文」をしているつもりはありません。なのに思い通りにならない。

例えば、あなたには片付けられないルームメートがいるとしましょう。そこであなたはこんなふうに言うかもしれない。「本でもドライヤーでも何でも貸してあげる。でも使い終わったら、ちゃんと元の場所にもどしてちょうだい。Is that too much to ask? 」 Is that too much to ask? は「これは多すぎるお願いですか?」つまり、「これって無理な注文なの?」という意味ですね。「それくらいやってくれてもいいわよね」みたいな感じです。

もう一例。あなたのダンナさんはあまりお手伝いをしてくれない(^^;) そこで。「ねえあなた、ゴミ出してって言ったわよね。Is that too much to ask?」
